A Few Words From A Friend

I have written about different tools and techniques that I use to stay positive along my journey.  Many of these techniques have served me in my daily life through life’s ordinary path of ups and downs.  Whether it be a particularly challenging time at work, or perhaps a personal struggle I may be facing, anytime is a good time to arm myself with positivity for the road ahead.

I have shared ideas of setting positive affirmations to set myself up for success.  Allowing my inner self to hear with clarity those all-important ‘I can’ statements.  By setting aside time each day to mentally strategize for success, means to me, that my day will run more smoothly.  Like an athlete, who mentally imagines all aspects of the event prior to doing it, will see in his mind’s eye the success he seeks.

I remember reading, years ago, that Roger Bannister, the first man to break the 4-minute mile spoke about his ‘mental game’ in preparation for his race.  You see, at the time, all the doctors studying his race said publicly in articles and interviews that ‘the human heart will cease beating if a man is to race at this pace’.  They flocked to the stadium, believing that they would have to administer life-saving measures to Bannister, as it was physically impossible to go at such a speed.  (I write ‘man’ by no means by accident because at the time it was firmly believed that women would surely die even to attempt to run such distance or such speeds)!

Roger Bannister, however, practised over and over in his mind’s eye, running the perfect race.  He reports his mind would replay the race over and over as he would see his mouth relaxed, his muscles moving with ease and grace, his breathing normal, etc.  The most remarkable thing was that he reported that he would cross the finish line and look at the time and it flashed 3:58:00.  He mentally prepared his entire being to race under 4 minutes.

….and do you know now fast he ran?

3:58:00

He believed….he mentally prepared….and his body just went ahead and did what he told it to do! (When asked later he is said to have told reporters that he saw himself do it a hundred times…I’m paraphrasing here….but you get the picture)!

That is why I spend a few minutes each night and each day mentally preparing myself for what is to come.  I admit…things don’t always work out for me…just like anyone else.  I have things that happen to me that I did not expect or anticipate.  I also have things that go exceptionally well for me and I like to think it has partially to do with the idea that I am mentally ready and open for those things to occur.

I made up Friendship Cards with wonderful little notes sent to me from friends.  With the use of my computer, I fancied them up by printing in beautiful fonts, I enlarged words that I wanted emphasized, and made some words stand out in bold.  I printed them out and decided to mount them onto pretty origami paper that I had around the house and I keep them beside me in my nightstand to lift my spirits should I need. They are another form of mentally reminding myself of who I am…what I am to others.  And they make a mental picture of myself as others see me so that IF I need to be reminded, I can conjure up a positive mental self when I need it.

Sometimes in sickness (or at any low point in our lives), we trick ourselves to thinking we are THIS self.  The present ‘ill’ self and not that person we know ourselves to be.  I think it is important to have reminders all around me of who I really am, in case my mind wants to stray onto a different stream of thinking. Finding quotes or sayings that speak deeply to who you are can be another option.  I suggest that printing them out and making them individualized to your own taste can help to make them resonate with you more deeply.  Finding passages in a book that you are reading, printing out a poem, a prayer, a saying from a favourite spiritual elder, or a note from your childhood that you have tucked away.  I have tiny cards that I have laminated that I keep in my wallet as well. Truly anything that can help to pick your spirits up can be a very valuable token to remind you of your worth and greatness on this planet!

My wish for today is that you already know this about yourself….and if you don’t, that you can find something to help you remember just that!
